Proper Use of Corrected Function in NHOST Inspections

Proper Use of Corrected Function in NHOST Inspections
2:19
It has come to our attention that many safety items that are repaired during the inspection process are incorrectly being marked as "Pass" rather than "Corrected" in the NHOST system. This misclassification can lead to an inaccurate representation of the program’s effectiveness, potentially diminishing the perceived importance of vehicle safety inspections.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

Why Accurate Reporting Matters
Every inspection in NHOST allows for three choices for each safety item:
  • Pass - The item was in proper working order at the time of inspection and required no repairs.
  • Corrected - The item was initially faulty but was repaired prior to the inspection being completed.
  • Rejected - The item did not meet safety standards and was not repaired at the time of inspection.

If a safety defect is identified when a vehicle arrives for inspection, and fixed by your shop, it should be marked as Corrected, not Pass. This ensures that we are accurately capturing how many vehicles initially have safety concerns but are brought into compliance before leaving your station.

Impact of Incorrect Entry
Incorrectly marking repaired items as "Pass" hides safety defects and skews data, making it appear as though previously unsafe vehicles passed without any issues.
A falsely high passing rate weakens the justification for the inspection program, suggesting that inspections are unnecessary.
Accurate data supports continued safety initiatives and ensures the State has a clear picture of vehicle safety trends.

Your Opportunity to Help Strengthen the Program
To maintain the integrity of the NH inspection program and ensure we capture an accurate picture of vehicle safety:

  • Train all inspectors to properly use the "Corrected" function.
  • Double-check entries before finalizing the report to ensure proper classification.
  • If unsure, refer to NHOST guidance or reach out for clarification (via the Help Line at 1-800-383-4124).

Your cooperation is critical in ensuring NH roads remain safe and that our inspection program continues to serve its purpose effectively.

Thank you for your attention to this important issue. If you have any questions, please call the NH Dept. of Motor Vehicles at 603-227-4120.
